Amok sunset bar & restaurant

Amok Sunset Bar and Restaurant debuted in Nusa Penida in August 2018, boasting an unparalleled location overlooking Gamat Bay, with the sun setting on one side and Mount Agung on the other. This remarkable setting called for an equally remarkable concept! If the idea of indulging in a bespoke cocktail while lounging in a 120-meter-high pool and watching the sunset sounds tempting, read on. Or, better yet, take a peek at this video put together by some of Amok’s guests!

A bamboo construction

The concept is based on three drivers : being respectful of the environment, leveraging the amazing view and offering a unique experience all day long. Care for the environment led to the use of local materials, in particular bamboo, for the construction. Several meters high platforms offer private spaces with a 360° view around. The swimming pool allows you to enjoy the place during the afternoon or at sunset.

Amok Sunset main building hosts the bar and the restaurant

Amok sunset bar and restaurant is organized around a large building built with bamboo and Alang-Alang facing a nice pool and the sunset. The technical parts (kitchen, toilets, etc.) are located at the rear of the building.

Amok Sunset Nests, 3-meter high VIP tables

Bamboo platforms allow enjoying the view in a private space. They are located 3 meters high to offer a 360° view of Mount Agung, the sea and Nusa Penida’s landscape. They are called the Nests!

Amok Sunset pool, at the forefront of the sunset

Amok’s pool allows you to cool down during the afternoon or to enjoy a signature mocktail or cocktail, a beer, or a glass of wine at any time. It has two beaches on each side, to lie in the water, and a shallow central area. I would be surprised if you do not ask someone to take your picture in the pool with the sea and the sunset in the background!

Original menus designed with the staff

Amok sunset bar and restaurant staff were recruited and trained in the spring of 2018. The main criteria were skills, experience but also a good understanding of the importance of customer satisfaction. They come from different horizons but one-third of the staff comes from Nusa Penida. The whole training period was an opportunity for them to get to know each other. They now form a very close team.

The team also actively participated in the development of the restaurant menu and the list of drinks. All the staff has been very enthusiastic and very involved in the opening of Amok.

A wide variety of Amok signature cocktails and mocktails

The cocktail and mocktail menu was specially made for Amok with two Bali-trained bartenders: Agus, who comes from Batu Madeg village in Nusa Penida, and Arif from Lombok.

Mocktails (non-alcoholic cocktails) are prepared with fresh fruit juice. The cocktails include vodka, gin, rum, tequila, and whiskey, but also use local arak.

During Happy Hour, from 5 pm to 6 pm with a second cocktail is offered for each cocktail paid.

Amok Restaurant and Sunset Bar also offers a wide selection of wines by glass or by the bottle.

International fusion cuisine based on local ingredients

The menu was designed by Chef Amel, who comes from Jakarta. The dishes have been specially designed for Amok restaurant. They were created following inspiration of international fusion cuisine, adapted to use fresh and local ingredients.

The menu also includes vegetarian and vegan dishes.

From lunch to dinner, and beyond at Amok sunset

Amok sunset bar and restaurant is open daily from lunch until 10 pm or later for those who decide to stay for dinner. It is also possible to book in advance for dinner, but it would be a shame not to enjoy the sunset, which is very spectacular as of 5.30 pm. One of the places to be in Nusa Penida.

Amok also regularly organizes techno parties with international DJs. Each DJ has his musical style but the music is always lounge at sunset time to preserve the magic of the moment and then evolves during dinner and the rest of the evening. The party generally ends around 2 am or even later for special occasions such as New Year’s Eve.

Live music groups are also regularly invited.

How to get to Amok sunset bar and restaurant ?

To get to Amok from Toyapakeh you will take the first intersection to the right, towards Crystal Bay and Gamat Bay.

Arrived at a fork, you will take the little path to the right, indicating Amok sunset. You will then continue this path till the end. About halfway the course is no longer paved. There are regular signs to confirm that, yes, you are on the right road!

The road is not (yet) brand new. If you are afraid to come back at night with your scooter, a shuttle service runs from the main road (at the fork) to Amok. Ask for schedules beforehand but there is a shuttle bus every half hour or so. You can park your scooter at the fork. If you have a driver, all of them on the island know Amok and will bring you there without any problem.
