Nusa Penida East Coast Day Trip from Bali (2026)

The east coast of Nusa Penida is wilder, more authentic and far less crowded than the west. While the day-trip crowds queue at Kelingking, the east side keeps the sacred cave temple of Goa Giri Putri, the Atuh–Diamond Beach panorama and the Thousand Islands viewpoint almost to itself β€” and you get to eat lunch with your feet in the sand. Here’s how to see it in one day from Bali, with the logistics fully handled β€” the package I run after years of organizing trips across the island.

West coast or east coast?

You can’t realistically do both coasts in a single day β€” the island is bigger than it looks and the roads are slow. The west coast (Kelingking, Crystal Bay, Broken Beach) is the classic first-timer day and the most iconic scenery; see our West Coast day trip for that. The east coast β€” this tour β€” is the better pick if you want fewer crowds, a spiritual highlight at Goa Giri Putri, the Atuh–Diamond panorama and a relaxed beach lunch, or if you’ve already done the west on a previous trip.

What’s included

  • Optional hotel pickup in Bali (Sanur, Seminyak, Canggu, Ubud, Jimbaran) β€” extra, depending on area.
  • Return fast boat Sanur ↔ Toyapakeh (Nusa Penida) β€” ~40 minutes each way.
  • Private air-con car with English-speaking driver-guide for the full day on Penida.
  • The East Coast highlights: Goa Giri Putri, Diamond Beach, Atuh Beach, and the Thousand Islands viewpoint.
  • Lunch on Atuh Beach, at a beach warung with your feet in the sand.
  • 25,000 IDR tourist tax β€” included.

Not included: Goa Giri Putri temple donation (50,000 IDR), extra drinks at lunch, snacks on the road.

The east-coast stops

1. Goa Giri Putri β€” the cave temple

We start at Goa Giri Putri, the island’s most sacred temple, hidden inside the largest cave on Nusa Penida. You slip in almost crawling through a narrow gap between the rocks, then the passage opens into a vast cavern lit by shafts of daylight, with shrines and ceremonies inside. It’s a genuinely spiritual stop, not just a photo spot β€” a sarong is required (rented on site). Full details on the Goa Giri Putri page.

2. Diamond Beach & Atuh Beach

Next, the east coast’s signature panorama. From the clifftop you look down on Diamond Beach β€” white sand, turquoise water and the diamond-shaped rock pillars standing offshore. A carved staircase descends to the sand if you want a closer look (swimming is dangerous here β€” strong currents). Right next door is Atuh Beach, a curved, more sheltered bay where we stop for lunch. It’s arguably the most beautiful beach panorama on the whole island. See the Atuh Beach & Diamond Beach page.

3. Lunch on Atuh Beach

This is the relaxed heart of the east-coast day: lunch at a beach warung right on Atuh Beach, feet in the sand, with the cliffs and islets in front of you. You have a long, unhurried stop here β€” time to eat, swim in the calmer water of the bay, and walk up to the Thousand Islands viewpoint nearby, with none of the rush of the west-coast circuit.

4. Thousand Islands viewpoint

A short walk from Atuh, the Thousand Islands viewpoint (Raja Lima / Pulau Seribu) looks out over a scatter of jagged limestone islets rising from the sea β€” one of the most dramatic coastal views on Nusa Penida, and far quieter than the west-coast viewpoints.

Optional β€” finish with lunch at Amok instead. Prefer to swap the beach lunch for the cliff-top Amok Sun & Cliff Club on the way back west? It’s possible, but Amok is on the other side of the island, so you’ll need to start about an hour earlier (the first boat from Sanur) to fit the extra drive. Just ask Roy when you book.

A typical day, hour by hour

  • 06:30 β€” Pickup at your Bali hotel (optional).
  • 07:30 β†’ 08:00 β€” Sanur harbour, fast boat departs.
  • 09:00 β€” Arrive at Toyapakeh, meet your driver-guide.
  • 09:45–10:45 β€” Goa Giri Putri cave temple.
  • 11:30 β€” Arrive Diamond Beach (clifftop panorama), then Atuh Beach.
  • ~12:00–14:30 β€” Beach lunch on Atuh + Thousand Islands viewpoint.
  • 16:00 β€” Back at Toyapakeh harbour.
  • 16:30 β†’ 18:00 β€” Fast boat to Sanur, then your Bali hotel.

The east coast is further from the harbour than the west, so there’s more driving β€” that’s the trade-off for the quiet and the beach lunch. For the optional Amok ending, the whole day shifts about an hour earlier.

Who this tour is (and isn’t) for

It’s for you if: you want fewer crowds than the west-coast circuit; you’re drawn to the spiritual side of the island (Goa Giri Putri); you love a dramatic beach panorama (Diamond, Atuh, Thousand Islands) and a relaxed lunch on the sand; or you’ve already done the west coast on a previous trip.

It’s probably not for you if: it’s your first and only day on Nusa Penida and you want the most iconic scenery β€” in that case the west-coast day trip (Kelingking, Crystal Bay) is the better first choice; or you have more time and can stay a night to do both coasts at a relaxed pace.

Want to stay overnight?

With one night on the island you can combine both coasts without rushing β€” the west on day one, the east on day two β€” and catch the sunset over Mount Agung that day-trippers never see. See where to stay on Nusa Penida to turn this into a two-day trip.

East Nusa Penida day trip FAQ

Should I do the east or west coast of Nusa Penida?

If it’s your first and only day, the west coast (Kelingking, Crystal Bay, Broken Beach) has the most iconic scenery. Choose the East Coast if you want fewer crowds, the Goa Giri Putri cave temple, the Atuh–Diamond panorama, and a relaxed beach lunch, or if you’ve already seen the West. You can’t comfortably do both coasts in one day.

Which sites are on the East Coast tour?

Goa Giri Putri cave temple, Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach (with a beach lunch on Atuh), and the Thousand Islands viewpoint. You can optionally swap the Atuh beach lunch for the Amok cliff club, with an earlier start.

Where do you have lunch on the east tour?

On Atuh Beach itself, at a beach warung with your feet in the sand β€” a long, relaxed stop. If you’d rather finish with lunch at the cliff-top Amok Sun & Cliff Club instead, that’s possible but needs an earlier start (the first boat from Sanur) for the extra drive west.

Can you swim at Diamond Beach or Atuh Beach?

Swimming at Diamond Beach is dangerous due to strong currents and shore break β€” it’s best enjoyed from the clifftop or the sand. Atuh Beach next door is calmer and more sheltered, and is generally the safer of the two for a paddle; your driver-guide will advise based on conditions that day.

Do I need a sarong for Goa Giri Putri?

Yes β€” a sarong is required to enter the temple. One can be rented at the entrance for a few thousand rupiah if you don’t have your own. A 50,000 IDR temple donation is paid on site.

Is the tour refundable?

Yes, free cancellation up to 48 h before departure. After that, the 30% deposit is kept.
