Nusa Penida Day Trip from Bali: West Coast Tour 2026

You’re in Bali for a week or two, you’ve seen the photos of Kelingking Beach, and you want to see Nusa Penida β€” but not stay overnight, just a day. It’s doable, and with the right logistics it can be one of the best days of your trip. Here’s how to see the west coast of Nusa Penida in a single day from Bali, without handling the logistics yourself, with the package I recommend after years of organising day trips to the island.

Why book a tour instead of doing it yourself?

If you have the time, I always recommend spending at least one night on Nusa Penida β€” you catch the sunset over Mount Agung and beat the morning crowds. But many travellers don’t have that luxury: a short stay in Bali, a packed schedule, and a wish to see Penida without moving hotels. In that case there are three ways to do it:

  1. Fully DIY. Grab/taxi to Sanur, buy your fast boat on the spot, negotiate a driver on arrival, race between viewpoints, and get back as best you can. Cheapest option, but 2–3 hours lost to negotiation and timing stress, and a lot of wasted road time if your driver doesn’t know the island.
  2. A generic OTA tour (Klook, GetYourGuide, Viator). Everything included, but you’re in a big group (8–20 people), often with a driver who speaks only basic English, on a rigid timetable. You gain simplicity, you lose flexibility.
  3. The day-trip package I run with Roy (my local Indonesian partner) and the Amok cliff club. Small group (max 6), an English-speaking driver-guide who knows every viewpoint, and lunch included above the cliff. Logistics fully handled β€” this is the option detailed below.

What’s included

  • Optional hotel pickup in Bali (Sanur, Seminyak, Canggu, Ubud, Jimbaran) β€” extra, depending on area.
  • Return fast boat Sanur ↔ Toyapakeh (Nusa Penida) β€” ~40 minutes each way.
  • Private air-con car with English-speaking driver-guide for the full day on Penida.
  • The 4 iconic west-coast sites: Kelingking, Crystal Bay, Broken Beach & Angel’s Billabong.
  • 2-course lunch at Amok Sun & Cliff Club with a drink (cocktail, mocktail or soft), plus pool and sundeck access after the meal.
  • 25,000 IDR tourist tax β€” included.

Not included: extra drinks at lunch, snacks on the road.

The 4 west-coast stops

1. Kelingking Beach β€” the iconic T-Rex

The postcard image of Nusa Penida: a limestone cliff shaped like a T-Rex head plunging into deep blue water. You’ll take your photo from the top, a 5-minute walk from the car park β€” there isn’t time to hike down to the beach (40 minutes each way) on a day trip. We arrive early, around 9:30am, to beat the wave of visitors that lands from 11am. Full details on the Kelingking Beach page.

2. Broken Beach & Angel’s Billabong

Further north on the west coast, these two geological wonders sit 100 metres apart and are visited together. Broken Beach (Pasih Uug) is a giant natural arch carved into the cliff, enclosing a circular beach reachable only from the sea β€” spectacular from above. Angel’s Billabong is a natural rock pool right beside it: at low tide it’s an infinity pool over the ocean; at high tide access is dangerous, and your driver-guide will tell you if it’s safe that day. Plan 30–45 minutes for both. See the Broken Beach & Angel’s Billabong page.

3. Crystal Bay β€” swim and snorkel

The third stop is Crystal Bay, a white-sand beach on the west of the island with a jungle-covered rock in the middle of the bay β€” its visual signature. The water is crystal-clear (hence the name) and it’s one of the best spots on Nusa Penida to swim or snorkel (mask & fins ~50,000 IDR on site). You usually have 45 minutes to an hour here β€” enough for a dip, a coffee at a warung under the coconut trees, and a few photos. More on the Crystal Bay page.

4. Lunch at Amok Sun & Cliff Club

Lunch is at Amok Sun & Cliff Club, the sunset club perched on the cliff above Gamat Bay, right next to Crystal Bay. To my mind it’s the best place to eat on the island: a panoramic view 120 m above the ocean, bamboo architecture, two infinity pools, and a menu rebuilt in May 2026 around plancha grills and pizzas. Your package includes a starter, a main and a drink, then 1.5 to 2 hours on site to eat and enjoy the pool or sundeck before heading back. The last return boat leaves at 5pm, so the on-site sunset is only possible if you stay overnight. More on the Amok Sun & Cliff Club page.

A typical day, hour by hour

Here’s what a real day looks like from Seminyak (adjust Β±30 min for your area of Bali):

  • 06:30 β€” Pickup at your Seminyak hotel (optional).
  • 07:30 β€” Arrive at Sanur harbour, boarding.
  • 08:00 β€” Fast boat departs.
  • 09:00 β€” Arrive at Toyapakeh, meet your driver-guide.
  • 09:45–10:30 β€” Kelingking Beach viewpoint.
  • 11:00–11:45 β€” Broken Beach & Angel’s Billabong.
  • 12:15–13:00 β€” Crystal Bay (swim or snorkel).
  • 13:15–15:30 β€” Lunch at Amok.
  • 16:00 β€” Return fast boat from Toyapakeh.
  • 17:30 β†’ 18:00 β€” Back at Sanur, then your Bali hotel.

The timing is tight but realistic β€” an optimised full day, not a slow stroll. That’s exactly why DIY so often turns into a race: without knowing the exact timing and the island’s driving loop, you lose 1–2 hours on the road. You can also slow the day down by dropping Crystal Bay.

Who this tour is (and isn’t) for

It’s for you if: you’re in Bali for a week or less and don’t want to change hotels; you travel as a family or couple and want the comfort of private transport; you’d rather have an English-speaking driver-guide than negotiate on arrival; and you like the idea of lunch somewhere exceptional rather than an anonymous warung.

It’s probably not for you if: you want the absolute cheapest option and are comfortable with Balinese-style DIY; you have more time and can stay a night on the island (recommended); or you specifically want the east coast (Atuh Beach, Diamond Beach) β€” that’s a separate full day.

Want to stay overnight?

The last boat back leaves at 5pm, so to catch the sunset from Amok you need at least one night on Nusa Penida. The best of the island comes out once the day boats have gone: empty roads, soft light, and that sunset over Mount Agung you never see on a day trip. If your schedule allows it, see where to stay on Nusa Penida to turn this into a two-day trip.

Nusa Penida day trip FAQ

How long does a Nusa Penida day trip from Bali take?

About 10–12 hours door to door, from ~6:30am (hotel pickup) to ~6pm (return). Timing varies by Β±30 minutes depending on your area of Bali β€” Ubud and Uluwatu are further from Sanur harbour than Seminyak or Canggu.

How much does a Nusa Penida day trip cost?

From $54 / 858,000 IDR per person in a group of 5–6; $58 in a group of 3–4; $70 per person as a couple; $95 solo. Free for under-4s. Hotel pickup/drop-off in Bali is an optional extra priced by area.

Which sites do you see in one day?

The 4 iconic west-coast sites: Kelingking Beach, Crystal Bay, Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong, plus lunch at Amok. The east coast (Atuh Beach, Diamond Beach) is not covered on a day trip β€” that’s a separate full day.

Can you visit Nusa Penida in a day from Ubud?

Yes, but the pickup is earlier (around 6am) because of the 1-hour drive from Ubud to Sanur harbour, and the return is correspondingly later (around 6:30pm). It’s the most time-pressured area of Bali for a day trip.

Is lunch included?

Yes β€” a starter and a main at Amok Sun & Cliff Club with a drink (mocktail or soft). Vegetarian, vegan, halal and gluten-free options are marked on the menu; tell us your restrictions when you book.

Can you snorkel on the day trip?

Yes, at Crystal Bay (mask & fins ~50,000 IDR on site, ~30 min in the water). For a longer snorkelling session (Manta Point or Toyapakeh Reef) you’d need a dedicated trip β€” not part of the standard package.

Can you stay for the sunset?

Not on a day trip β€” the last ferry back leaves Nusa Penida at 5pm. For the sunset on the island you need at least one night; see where to stay on Nusa Penida.

Is the tour refundable?

Yes, free cancellation up to 48 h before departure. After that, the 30% deposit is kept.
