Suwehan Beach is one of those very beautiful beaches of Nusa Penida island which remains quite wild. It is now quite easy to get to the beach with a brand new staircase. The way down till the beach will take you less than twenty minutes. It is close to Atuh Beach and it may be a good idea to combine the visit of both beaches in the same tour. It’s one of my favorite places in Nusa Penida.
It is better to arrive at Suwehan Beach before noon. Because the beach is facing east and is located right down an impressive cliff. So in the afternoon the beach is in the shadow of the cliff. Swimming will be less nice and the light will not be as good for your photos. Try also to avoid high tide because the beach will be smaller or there may be no beach at all. And no way to get a photo of the rock in the middle of the bay.
And close properly your backpack. Because during my last visit a wave, stronger than the other ones, rebounded against a rock and, as improbable as it seems, filled completely the pocket in which was my cell phone. I discovered it only 30 minutes later and the phone was dead …
Here are the tide times for Bali.
If you have a drone, it is also better to fly your drone from the top of the cliff because the GPS location might be more difficult down there. And with no GPS location, if you loose the connection with the drone, you may loose it, falling in the sea or hitting the cliff.
The owner of the small warung at the end of the road are very nice. They will show you the way to a view point where you can a nice view from the top of the cliff. There are 3 nice bungalows recently built there. You can take cool photos from there and you can also fly the drone from this area. It will be much safer. After hiking down to Suwehan Beach and then back up you can have drinks or basic food in the warung. The are at the end of the world (of Nusa Penida Bali) and they deserve a little support !
Once you managed to hike down to Suwehan Beach, the views are breathtaking. At the bottom of the recently built stairs you will have a first overview of the beach. And you will also see in the distance the rocks that are in front of Atuh Beach.
But to have a beautiful view of the rock that sits in the middle of the bay you will have to go to the other end of the beach. That’s why it is better to avoid high tide because you may not able to reach the beach in front of this rock.
And moreover, at low tide, you will have your own private white sand beach with probably no one else to share it with !
There are 400 stairs from the beach to the temple where you parked your motorbike.
Since the main road through the interior of Nusa Penida is new, it is pretty easy to go to Suwehan Beach. Recently most of the road network of the North of Nusa Penida island has also been asphalted. Count one hour driving on a renovated road, regardless where you come from. The best way to get there is to download Google Map offline and to follow the directions. Please check the itinerary before going and also how to drive safely in Nusa Penida.
The road is very steep during a few kilometers, so make sure you have good brakes on your motorbike. Last time I went there in January 2024 my brakes where not strong enough to allow me to make a complete stop before a very tight turn and I ended up in the bush, 10 meters away from the road …
If you go to Atuh Beach first, it is better to take the road following the north coast of Nusa Penida. And to come back to your place through the brand new inner road which will offer some very nice viewpoints. For example at Teletubbies. There are indeed many options to combine the visit of Suwehan Beach with other places to see. Check here some ideas of tours in Nusa Penida island.
