What is a discovery dive ?
Discovery diving is an initiation to scuba diving. It is designed for all those who want to discover the sensations of diving. But without having to spend the few days necessary to become a certified diver. Discovering diving in Bali is quite a nice experience to bring back from your trip, isn’t it? And who knows, you may like it so much that you will want to continue or come back to Bali to take the PADI Open Water Diver Course. And if you want to know more you can read our complete guide of scuba diving in Bali.
How is a discovery dive in Bali?
Discovery diving with Warnakali follows the standards of the main diving organization in the world, PADI. It consists of some training in the swimming pool, followed by two sea dives in Nusa Penida, Bali. The experience is monitored by experienced dive instructors, knowing perfectly Nusa Penida diving sites and its currents. Finally, to ensure the best service, each instructor will only guide two divers for a discovery dive.
We start discovering diving in the pool
We will first pick you up from your hotel in Nusa Penida in the late afternoon to bring you to the center and choose your equipment. After a short diving theory course, it’s time to go swimming and “breathe underwater”. You calmly familiarize yourself with the diving equipment in the small pool in shallow water.
And then you will dive into the 3 meter deep pool to learn to equalize your ears in a reassuring environment. That’s it, you are ready to dive in the beautiful waters of Nusa Penida ! But before that we will probably enjoy the beautiful sunset from Warnakali dive center !
Then let’s go diving in Nusa Penida underwater !
We will pick you up the next morning at your hotel and we will reach directly the port of Toyapakeh. From there we will go on the first dive spot for your first underwater discovery dive around Nusa Penida. After a well deserved fruit salad and coffee, we will make a quick assessment of the first dive. Soon, you will then return to the colors of the aquatic world for the second discovery dive. With a little luck you may have seen Manta rays during one of the two dives. Finally (that soon ?), we take you back to the hotel. And, that’s it, you’ll become a member of the great scuba divers family !
At what age can you discover diving ?
For a discovery dive at sea you must be at least 10 years old. No previous experience with scuba diving is necessary, but you must be in good physical health. We are proud to have initiated to diving Elias, 10, who had as a nice birthday present a discovery dive in Bali. And more precisely at Manta Point with the Manta Rays of Nusa Penida!
Between 8 and 10 years in the pool, from 10 years at sea
But if your child is between 8 and 10 years old, you can also initiate him to diving in Warnakali swimming pool. Two options for this : the Bubblemaker course for a first contact with diving and with the PADI Seal Team course which will allow him to strengthen his technique by supplementing exciting AquaMissions.
What will you learn during your discovery dive ?
You learn the basic safety guidelines and skills needed to dive under the direct supervision of a PADI Professional. During an open water dive, you’ll practice a few more skills in shallow water to prepare for your adventure. Get ready to:
- Go over the scuba equipment you use to dive and how easy it is to move around underwater with your gear.
- Find out what it’s like to breathe underwater.
- Learn key skills that you’ll use during every scuba dive.
- Have fun swimming around and exploring.
- Hear about becoming a certified diver through the PADI Open Water Diver course.
What scuba gear will you use ?
Warnakali will provide all the basic scuba gear you’ll use including a mask, snorkel, fins, regulator, buoyancy control device, dive gauges and a tank.
All equipment at the Warnakali Dive Center is brand new and maintained by qualified personnel. And most importantly, all the necessary security equipment is available.
How deep is a discovery dive ?
The PADI standard requires staying within the limit of 12 meters deep. The first 3 meters are the most important to properly equalize the air pressure in his inner ear. This is why we practice it in the swimming pool before going to sea.
The good news is that most dive sites in Nusa Penida allow very nice dives at less than 12 m deep.
Where do a discovery dive in Nusa Penida ?
Your Warnakali instructor will choose the best sites each day according to the tides, currents and weather conditions.
The most common sites for your first dive, depending on the conditions, are:
- Manta point
- Gamat Bay
- Crystal bay
- Toyapakeh
- PED, SD, Buyuk, Sental or Tugu
You will find all the information on these sites in this article devoted to the most beautiful diving sites in Nusa Penida.
In any case your dive instructor will ensure your safety, your comfort and make this experience unforgettable !

Andresa says:
Hi, I would like to book for 2 people to do scuba diving on July 17 or 18 departing from Sanur, ideally in Nusa Penida – Manta Point and Crystal Bay:
One person has never done diving before, while the other person has PADI open water certificate.
Do you have any option to include a boat transfer from/back to Sanur? And what would be the pricing? Many thanks!
Thank you!
Blaise says:
Hello Andresa,
For the discovery scuba diving you will need to do a pool session before the 2 dives in the sea.
You have 2 options from Sanur :
– either take a public boat from Sanur and dive with Dune Penida but it may be a bit short to do the pool session + the 2 dives the same day even if you take the first boat and the last boat, so you may have to spend one night in Nusa penida.
– or do the pool session at Dune Bali in Sanur and then dive from Sanur with Dune Bali.
i sent you by email the contact who will give you the details and the prices for both options.
Enjoy your dives !
