Atuh Beach

I went for the first time to Atuh Beach in June 2016. In the pictures I have a knee bandage because I had a bad fall on a scooter. I gained too much confidence driving on the roads of Nusa Penida. The road from Suana to Tanglad had just been redone, but ... not until the end. And at the turn of a bend, I came across (then in) a hole in the road and I fell. The Balinese, whom I had imprudently doubled, kindly accompanied me to the clinic at Tanglad. The nice nurse cleaned my injuries, used a full bottle of betadine and a big load of bandage and I left with more fear than harm.

Atuh Beach is, along with Crystal Bay, one of the most beautiful beaches in Nusa Penida. It is now very easily accessible with a brand new road. It takes about an hour from the port of Toyapakeh or an hour and a quarter from Crystal Bay.

Atuh Beach : right side or left side ?

The descent on the right side of the beach was developed in 2016 with a concrete staircase. Not very pretty, but rather practical. In 2016, it did not go all the way down, the last step was almost two meters! It is complete since 2017 and has now 166 steps. The way down is easy enough. The way up a little more tiring, especially since some steps are, in the Balinese fashion, very high.

Personally I find the arrival from the right very beautiful and you may have the chance to see from above Manta rays before going down to the beach. But the last kilometers of road to reach the parking at the top of the cliff are still a little bit bumpy.

I tried the road coming from the left side in April this year. It is brand new and much easier. The staircase to go down is not completely finished but it should not take long. And there are much less than on the other side. So you can reach the beach from the top in less than ten minutes. That’s why this is now the option I recommend ! To go to the left side of the beach indicate on Google Map Atuh Beach. To go to the right side you have to indicate Korawa Beach (renamed recently on Google Map Diamond Beach).

What to do at Atuh Beach ?

You will find parasols and deckchairs on the beach. There are also small warungs that serve fruit juices, grilled fish and basic Indonesian dishes. Like everywhere in Nusa Penida, watch out for waves and currents when you go for a swim. Atuh Beach is not yet part of the daily tours sold to tourists. It remains therefore very pleasant to spend the day there if the weather is nice.

After Atuh Beach, what’s next ?

For deserted beaches lovers, the nearby beach of Suwehan can be an alternative or a second goal for the same day. If you came along the north coast to come, an option may also be to return by Tanglad and the interior of the island.
