Diving Crystal Bay – The Iconic Mola Mola Dive Site
Crystal Bay is one of the most famous dive sites in Bali — and arguably one of the most legendary in Indonesia. Diving Nusa Penida without diving Crystal Bay would be like visiting Paris without seeing the Eiffel Tower.
This site is world-renowned for seasonal encounters with the majestic Mola Mola (oceanic sunfish), making it a bucket-list destination for divers between July and October — and sometimes even earlier depending on conditions.
But Crystal Bay is far more than just a Mola Mola hotspot. With vibrant coral reefs, diverse marine life, dramatic underwater slopes, and multiple dive routes, it remains one of the most complete dive sites in Nusa Penida year-round.

Why Crystal Bay Is Famous Worldwide
Crystal Bay gained international recognition because it is one of the most reliable places in the world to encounter the Mola Mola.
Mola Mola (Oceanic Sunfish) Season
The Mola Mola is an extraordinary deep-water species that continues to grow throughout its life, reaching up to 3–4 meters in height and weighing more than one ton. During seasonal upwellings, cooler and nutrient-rich water rises from the depths. These conditions attract cleaning fish — and the sunfish follow.
Between July and October, divers descend to deeper slopes near the famous second corner, where Mola Mola often hover motionless in the blue while being cleaned. It is a rare and unforgettable experience.
However, currents in this area can include strong lateral and down currents. Diving here requires proper experience and, above all, a knowledgeable guide who understands the site perfectly.

Understanding the Dive Site Layout
Crystal Bay consists of two main sections separated by a sandy channel that slopes down to 30–40 meters and continues toward the strait between Nusa Penida, Nusa Ceningan, and Nusa Lembongan.
The Left Side – Coral Plateau
The southwest section of Crystal Bay features a shallow coral plateau protected from the strongest currents. This area is ideal for beginner dives, discovery dives, and underwater photography.
Expect colorful corals, dense reef fish populations, turtles, and excellent visibility. It is a calm and beautiful introduction to diving in Nusa Penida.
The Right Side – The Blue & The Mola Route
The right side, closer to the islet in the center of the bay, leads toward deeper slopes and cleaning stations where Mola Mola are most frequently encountered. This section is more exposed and conditions vary depending on tide and current.

The Corners and the Canyons
Crystal Bay offers multiple dive routes, making every dive slightly different.
The First Corner
For less experienced divers, a conservative route includes exploring the coral plateau and reaching the first corner — a natural rock angle that protects the bay from stronger currents.
Staying before this point provides rich marine life while remaining in relatively sheltered conditions.
The Canyons
Beyond the first corner, the reef slopes steeply downward like a coral spine. Currents may increase here, attracting larger species such as trevallies.
On the right side of the slope lie three preserved canyons. These areas are rich in macro life and vibrant coral formations. Because fewer divers venture here, they remain particularly colorful and diverse.
The Famous Second Corner
Continuing along the wall leads to the second corner — the most reliable location to encounter Mola Mola in the blue.
This area can experience strong or even violent currents, and diving here should only be done with an experienced guide. After exploring the deeper section, divers usually return to the protected reef inside the bay to finish the dive safely.

Marine Life at Crystal Bay
Even outside Mola Mola season, Crystal Bay feels like an underwater aquarium.
Reef life includes:
- Surgeonfish, butterflyfish, rabbitfish, sergeant fish
- Ribbon moray eels and other morays
- Turtles
- Occasionally bamboo sharks and manta rays
- Leaf fish and frogfish
Macro lovers will also find:
- Zanzibar shrimp
- Thor shrimp
- Porcelain crabs
- Numerous nudibranch species
The site supports both wide-angle pelagic encounters and macro photography in a single dive.
