Ideas for tour and itinerary in Nusa Penida

There are many things to see and do in Nusa Penida. But if you do not have the opportunity to stay there for 15 days, you will probably want to group together the visit of several places in one of the different itineraries described. You can use two intense days to follow two of the circuits described. You only have to add a day dedicated to scuba diving and an incredible happy hour sunset and you have your mini 3-day stay organized ! Celebrations and events in Nusa Penida and Bali

There are religious ceremonies every day in Nusa Penida and Bali. It’s a fundamental part of social life in Bali. You will often see processions passing in the street. And you will often hear people say “tomorrow I can’t, I’m having a ceremony”. Certain ceremonies will have a limited impact on your trip. But others can upset all of your plans.

I always sympathize, with a hint of fun anyway, when tourists tell me that they have a flight or a return boat to Bali scheduled on Nyepi day. This is indeed absolutely impossible because on this day the airport is closed, you have to stay confined inside your room and all activity stops. There is also an equivalent holiday dedicated to the sea in Nusa Penida called Nyepi Laut.

Culture and history of Nusa Penida

The page dedicated to culture and history of Nusa Penida is a bit short, as there are not many sources. But it is exciting. And that will help you better understand the origin of Nyepi. And also why Nusa Penida has been preserved from tourism for so long, because of its bad reputation!

Nusa Penida is more busy now that borders opened again. But it is less crowded than 2019. So it is a good time to visit !

    • This website is very helpful.

Is there any difference in the types of boats that leave from Sanur compared to Kusamba?

Is it much more difficult getting off the boat at Kusamba compared to Sanur?

Could you please email me a map?

      Best Wishes

      • Hello Kellie,
The fast boat between Bali and Nusa Penida are very similar, from Sanur and from Kusamba.
There are some floating jetties in Kusamba leading you from the boat to the beach so I would say getting off is a little bit less comfortable but it is manageable.
Finally i sent the map to your email.
If you need any assistance to book your boat, a driver in Bali or Penida or snorkeling I can also send you a contact.

Enjoy your stay in Bali !

  • Hi Blaise

Thanks for your informative website. During wet season are you able to visit most attractions or do the state of the roads cause access problems? Thx

    • Hi Kylie,
You will be able to visit most of Nusa Penida attractions during wet season. The state of the roads will not really be an issue.
But clearly it will be less nice to drive a scooter under heavy rain. And it would not be recommended as well to hike down to Kelingking Beach for example if its raining because the path will be slippery. Nevertheless even during wet season the rain usualy last only a few hours during the day.

  • Hai Blaise,

Thanks for your informative website. I am planning to to for holiday this up coming May, can I get the pdf map please. Thank you in advance.

  • Hi!
Can you tell me when tourism started in nusa penida, when international trade begann, and when the roads were built? I just spent a few days there, and it is truly breath taking

    • Hello Victoria.

When I first came to Nusa Penida in 2015 there were only 2 or 3 hotels. Most of the roads already existed but were in very poor condition. Tourism really took off in 2018 with impressive growth since then, except obviously in 2020/2021.
It is still a good time to invest if you want to buy a land!
