Ich entdeckte die Insel Nusa Penida zum ersten Mal während einer Reise nach Bali im Mai 2015, und seitdem bin ich bereits 30-mal zurückgekehrt. Bei jedem Besuch möchte ich einen neuen Ort erkunden und mir eine fundierte Meinung über die Top 15 Sehenswürdigkeiten auf Nusa Penida bilden. Die Insel bietet alles – von atemberaubenden Stränden und geheimnisvollen Höhlentempeln bis hin zu schwindelerregenden Klippen und unglaublichen Tauchplätzen. Um die Schönheit von Nusa Penida wirklich zu schätzen, empfehle ich, einige Nächte auf der Insel zu verbringen!
Einige Orte haben sich mit der steigenden Zahl an Touristen etwas verändert. Betonstufen ersetzten die kleinen Pfade, die manchmal ziemlich gefährlich waren. Die Einheimischen bauten Parkplätze und kleine Warungs. Doch die Schönheit der Insel und die atemberaubenden Ausblicke werden Ihnen weiterhin den Atem rauben. Und da der Tourismus erst nach der Covid-19-Pandemie allmählich wieder anläuft, werden Sie für mehrere Monate nicht allzu sehr von anderen Touristen gestört sein. Wenn Sie die Insel besuchen, erleben Sie fast noch das Nusa Penida, das ich im Jahr 2015 entdeckt habe!
Die Reihenfolge der Orte ist ein wenig willkürlich, aber ich habe mit den ikonischen Sehenswürdigkeiten von Nusa Penida begonnen und mit den schönsten und authentischsten Stätten abgeschlossen – jenen, die ich persönlich am meisten schätze.
Kelingking Beach
Diese Liste der 15 schönsten Sehenswürdigkeiten auf der Insel Nusa Penida muss unbedingt mit dem Kelingking Beach beginnen. Er ist der berühmteste Ort auf Nusa Penida – und alle Tourismusgiganten wie Tripadvisor oder Booking nutzen mittlerweile ein Foto vom Kelingking Beach, um Bali zu illustrieren.
Kelingking ist ein spektakulärer Felsvorsprung, der ins Meer hinausragt. Der Felsen sieht ein wenig aus wie das Rückgrat eines Dinosauriers, der zum Meer hinunterkommt, um zu trinken. Auf Google Maps wird die Bucht deshalb auch „T-Rex Bay“ genannt. Der Ausblick ist außergewöhnlich, aber wenn Sie den Mut und die Zeit haben, sollten Sie unbedingt bis zum Strand hinuntergehen. Ziehen Sie festes Schuhwerk an, und unten am Strand achten Sie bitte auf Wellen und Strömungen. Glauben Sie mir: Kelingking Beach lohnt sich auf jeden Fall!
Broken Beach & Angel’s Billabong
Die Nummer 2 und 3 der schönsten Sehenswürdigkeiten auf der Insel Nusa Penida sind ebenfalls spektakulär – und deshalb auch sehr beliebt bei den Tagesausflügen nach Nusa Penida, die von Bali aus organisiert werden. Damit Sie die Erfahrung wirklich genießen können, empfiehlt es sich, entweder vor 11 Uhr vormittags oder nach 15 Uhr dort anzukommen.
Broken Beach
Ein Einsturz eines Teils der Klippe hat den Broken Beach entstehen lassen. Der eingestürzte Abschnitt hat eine kreisförmige Gestalt, und das Meer hat im schmalsten Teil dieses Kreises einen natürlichen Bogen gegraben. Das Ganze sieht daher aus wie eine runde Bucht mit einem Torbogen, der über dem Meer hängt. Schauen Sie sich die Fotos an – dann verstehen Sie sofort! Der (sehr) kleine Strand ist nicht zugänglich, doch mit etwas Glück können Sie von der Klippe aus Mantas beobachten.
Angels Billabong
Angel’s Billabong ist ein natürlicher Pool, der in die Klippen eingebettet ist. Bei Flut füllt er sich mit klarem Wasser, und bei Ebbe wird das Naturbecken vollständig sichtbar. Das Wasser ist kristallklar und es macht großen Spaß, bei Ebbe dort ein Bad zu nehmen. Man muss jedoch sehr vorsichtig sein und darf auf keinen Fall bei Flut schwimmen, da eine einzige Welle einen ins offene Meer ziehen könnte – mit nur geringer Chance, zurückzukommen.
Crystal Bay
Crystal Bay gehört eindeutig zu den Top-5-Attraktionen der Insel Nusa Penida. Vor der Corona-Krise konnte der Strand sehr überfüllt sein, doch in den kommenden Monaten sollte das kein Problem mehr darstellen. Crystal Bay vereint die Vorzüge eines Sandstrandes, der leicht über die Straße erreichbar ist, mit einem spektakulären Felsen, der mitten in der Bucht steht. Der Strand ist nach Westen ausgerichtet, und die Sonnenuntergänge sind oft atemberaubend.
Crystal Bay ist außerdem ein bekannter Ort zum Tauchen. Wenn Sie kein Taucher sind, können Sie sich vor Ort dennoch Maske, Schnorchel und Flossen besorgen. Seien Sie jedoch vorsichtig und schwimmen Sie nicht über die Zone hinaus, in der die Boote in der Bucht ankern – die Strömungen können sehr stark sein.
Atuh Beach und Diamond Beach
Atuh Beach gehört zusammen mit Crystal Bay zu den schönsten Stränden der Insel Nusa Penida und ist mittlerweile sehr leicht zugänglich. Vom Hafen in Toyapakeh braucht man etwa eine Stunde, um dorthin zu gelangen. Wenn man die richtige Route nimmt, liegt Atuh Beach auf der einen Seite und Diamond Beach auf der anderen.
Diamond Beach ist vor allem durch die in die Klippen geschlagenen Treppen bekannt geworden – ein absolutes Muss für alle, die gerne Fotos für soziale Netzwerke machen. Atuh Beach wiederum ist besonders angenehm zum Schwimmen bei Flut, da es dort weder allzu starke Wellen noch gefährliche Strömungen gibt.
Adiwana Warnakali Tauchort
Nach diesen Top-5-Sehenswürdigkeiten auf der Insel Nusa Penida kann ich nicht widerstehen, noch zwei Orte einzuschließen, die ich besonders mag – und das nicht nur, weil ich sie selbst erschaffen habe! Adiwana Warnakali ist ein Resort mit TTauchzentrum, a Restaurant und Hotel mit Spa. Es zeichnet sich durch dieselben Besonderheiten aus: einen unglaublichen Blick auf den Sonnenuntergang auf der einen Seite und den Vulkan Agung auf der anderen.
Amok Sonnenuntergang
Amok ist eine aus Bambus gebaute Sunset-Bar und ein Restaurant, das auf der Spitze eines Vorgebirges mit Blick aufs Meer errichtet wurde. Es ist ein besonderer Ort zum Mittag- oder Abendessen, um den Nachmittag am Pool zu verbringen oder den Sonnenuntergang zu genießen. Gamat Bay
Bevor Sie bei Amok den Sonnenuntergang mit einem Drink genießen, lohnt sich vielleicht ein Abstecher zur Gamat Bay. Dieser Strand ist die kleine Schwester von Crystal Bay – aber wilder. Die Bucht ist ein echtes Aquarium, allerdings können die Strömungen stark sein, und wahrscheinlich werden Sie dort nur wenige andere Menschen antreffen. Wenn Sie in Gamat Bay schnorcheln möchten, sollten Sie unbedingt Ihre eigenen Flossen mitbringen – oder lieber gleich an Land bleiben. Auch für Taucher ist es ein sehr schöner Spot.
Goa Giri Putri
Für die Nr. 9 der sehenswerten Orte auf der Insel Nusa Penida wechseln wir die Kategorie – mit dem Tempel von Goa Giri Putri. Es handelt sich um einen Tempel, oder besser gesagt um eine Abfolge von Tempeln, die in einer Höhle errichtet wurden. Die balinesischen Hindus absolvieren dort einen Reinigungspfad, der mehrere Stunden dauern kann, da er einen Halt an jedem Tempel innerhalb der Höhle umfasst. Sie können den Rundgang auch schneller machen, sollten aber zumindest versuchen, an der Doppelzeremonie des letzten Tempels vor dem Ausgang teilzunehmen – halb hinduistisch, halb buddhistisch.
Toyapakei Hafen
Toyapakeh ist der Ankunftshafen auf Nusa Penida für die meisten Schnellboote von Bali. Gleichzeitig ist es auch ein sehr bekanntes Tauchgebiet, insbesondere für Drifttauchgänge. Ich genieße dort gerne ein Frühstück oder einen Fruchtsaft im Warung Restu direkt am Strand. Es ist zudem das einzige muslimische Dorf auf der Insel, was ihm einen doppelt exotischen Charakter verleiht.
Temeling
Mit Temeling betreten wir nun den letzten Teil unseres Rankings der sehenswerten Orte auf der Insel Nusa Penida. Diese letzten vier Plätze mag ich besonders, weil sie wunderschön und gleichzeitig viel weniger besucht sind.
Temeling vereint einen Primärwald, ein Naturbecken und zwei sehr romantische Orte am Meer. Die Landschaft ist beeindruckend, und die Vielfalt der Atmosphären – zwischen dem Spaziergang im unberührten Wald und den beiden kleinen, verlassenen Stränden – wird Sie garantiert verzaubern. Ein wunderschöner Ausflug für einen halben Tag.
Guyangan Wasserfall
Der Guyangan Wasserfall, auch Peguyangan genannt, ist vor allem für seine blaue Treppe bekannt, die sich entlang der Klippe hinabzieht. Von dort aus genießen Sie einen atemberaubenden Blick auf die Klippen der Insel Nusa Penida.
Als Belohnung finden Sie am Ende der Treppe – nach einem kleinen Tempel – mehrere natürliche Becken direkt an der Felswand. Dort können Sie sich nach dem schwindelerregenden Abstieg erfrischen. Vor allem aber können Sie hier sicher den Wellen trotzen, die am Rand der Klippen brechen. Ein garantiert aufregendes Erlebnis!
Suwehan Beach
Suwehan Beach
Suwehan Beach ist einer der schönsten Strände der Insel Nusa Penida, der noch recht unberührt ist, da er abseits der klassischen Touren liegt. Dank der neuen Treppe ist er inzwischen jedoch leicht zugänglich – in weniger als zwanzig Minuten gelangen Sie hinunter. Der Strand liegt ganz in der Nähe von Atuh Beach, sodass es sich anbietet, beide Besuche auf einer Route zu kombinieren.
Beachten Sie jedoch, dass Sie die richtige Zeit für Ihren Besuch wählen sollten: eher am Morgen, da der Strand nach Osten ausgerichtet ist, und möglichst bei Ebbe – sonst gibt es praktisch keinen Strand.
Seganing Wasserfall
Der Seganing Wasserfall ist einer der Orte an der Südwestküste der Insel Nusa Penida, an denen Sie herrliche Landschaften bewundern können – und sich vielleicht ein wenig Nervenkitzel gönnen, wenn Sie dem mehr oder weniger gut erkennbaren Pfad an der Klippe folgen. Die Strecke ist auch nur teilweise gesichert …
Erwarten Sie allerdings keinen Wasserfall, der von der Spitze der Klippe herabstürzt – sonst könnten Sie enttäuscht sein.
Nusa Lembongan
Nusa Penida bezeichnet den Archipel aus drei Inseln: Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan und Nusa Ceningan. Letztere beiden sind durch eine gelbe Brücke verbunden, die vor einigen Jahren eingestürzt ist, aber identisch – hoffentlich stabiler – wieder aufgebaut wurde.
Nusa Lembongan und Nusa Ceningan sind sehr klein; man kann sie mit dem Roller in zwei Stunden umrunden. Dennoch lohnt sich ein Ausflug dorthin auf jeden Fall. Urteilen Sie selbst!

I have a question regarding Nusa Penida, if a reliable car and driver is hired for our stay are the attractions you’ve mentioned safely accessed. I have this vision of driving on an incredibly steep, narrow dangerous track in order to get to some of the wonderful sites you’ve mentioned. We would love to visit and experience the landscape and seascape and a quieter side of Bali but I don’t wish to put us in any dangerous situations. We would be looking at possibly a 4 night stay, are there many restaurants or warungs on the island that you can walk to from accomodation. Any further information would be greatly appreciated.. The car drivers are very professional and know very well the roads. Most of the hotels or resorts have there own restaurants and will be happy to organize a tour with a local car driver. Nusa Penida is indeed pretty wild, which is part of its charm but if you follow some basic ground rules it will be very safe !

I do drive ariund Java and Bali for over 25 years so I like to do that also on Penida.

I guess it is possible to rent a car without driver in Nusa Penida but I don’t know personally where do ask. If someone knows an address it would be nice to answer the comment with the contact.
Please nevertheless keep in mind that Nusa Penida roads are pretty narrow which means you often need to get your left wheels out of the concrete road, sometimes very close to the edge of some cliff, when you cross another car or a truck. I am a good driver but I i would be scared to drive myself a car in Nusa Penida …

– Guyangan, Seganing, Suwehan, Gamat Bay : you will have to walk down a narrow path or a staircase to get to the beach and there is not much to see if you don’t
– Kelingking Beach and Atuh Beach : ou will have to walk down a narrow path or a staircase to get to the beach but the view is still amazing from the top of the cliff

The safest place to bring a toddler to the beach is definitely Crystal Bay. You can choose an accommodation in the village of Penida and go walking to Crystal Bay beach from there. But be aware that since January 11 Crystal Bay road is closed. I guess it will be repaired in the next weeks.
Alternatively you can stay in Toyapakeh where there is also a small beach from where the snorkeling and diving boats are leaving.
You can also visit with a car with driver the other attractions such as Kelingking Beach, Diamond Beach but I would not recommend to bring the toddler to the beach, and also Broken Beach but you need to be super careful as there is no fence to prevent people to fall from the very high cliffs.

Almost all of the sites are accessible by motorbike. The road conditions vary a lot — some are in very good condition, while others can be quite bad, so do be careful when riding.
